METRO WATER SERVICES 3RD AVENUE PARK

The Metro Water Services 3rd Avenue Park is a key piece of the Master Plan for the entire 55-acre campus of the MWS Central Operations Plant including the current stormwater infrastructure. The site bisected by nearly a mile of the Cumberland River Greenway is bordered by both the Cumberland River and I- 65 make it a critical edge of the capitol city’s urban center and a highly desirable location for a new neighborhood park. The 3rd Avenue park features adventure play elements, boulders, troughs and interactive elements such as dams and switches allow users to interpret their own paths for the water to flow and are surrounded by extensive native plantings. The park is designed to interface directly with the public and serve as an educational tool for private developers within the region. The complete conversion of 3rd Avenue (4 blocks running adjacent to the MWS Central Operations Plant) into an active “Green Street” serves as Phase One of the Master Plan Implementation. The 3rd Avenue project will include a new multi-use path themed around the concepts of Ecology, Play, and Education. Integrated bio-retention will filter all stormwater from the street in visible and educational ways A new community playground with an interactive natural water feature serving as the paths focal point will provide a necessary playground for neighborhood families while also teaching children about the water cycle.
